Between 1989 and 1997, Allan Marain was an Assistant Deputy Public Defender in Middlesex County. In that capacity, he handled innumerable theft, drug, burglary, sexual assault, arson, kidnapping, and murder cases. Allan resigned when his Public Defender workload became so great that he was no longer able to give each of his cases the time and attention it needed. The private practice to which Allan returned now provides that opportunity.
Allan is admitted to practice before all New Jersey State Courts, and before the United
States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Also the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Tax Court, and the United States Supreme Court.
Allan belongs to the New Jersey State Bar Association, where he is immediate past chair of its Criminal Law Section. He is a past chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association Municipal Court Practice Section. He is a member of the Legal Committee of NORML (National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws). Allan helped found NORML-NJ. He is one of its incorporators, a trustee, and now serves as its Legal Defense Coordinator.
Allan also belongs to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a trustee of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey. He is a former trustee of the Middlesex County
Bar Association. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of James Publishing Incorporated, publisher of Relentless Criminal Cross Examination and numerous other litigation texts. He is on the Middlesex County Assignment Judge's Criminal Lawyers Committee.
